A teacher should definitely try to push a student with potential, beyond the satisfactory, but forcing is not a good resort according to me. A teacher is a figure of respect and role model and should be a source of positive energy. Forcing or testing ones limits by pressurizing is a negative gesture. Like in the movie however, where the student resonates with the teacher in the idea of attaining his ultimate goal of supreme success, trials like these can push a student to unleash his potential beyond boundaries in some cases, but it is more likely to cause demotivation in the students in general.
So in that case, to push students beyond satisfactory, the teacher should teach his students to criticize their own work. This should be given equal importance with the subject that is being taught. Also, the fact that WHY one is learning a subject, what does one gain from it, should also be given importance and discussed with students. It is true that loud appreciation is always harmful, however, after one has worked hard, a few encouraging words can often uplift a student's motivation towards his work, but appreciation should be measured and accompanied by gentle criticism.
Every teacher has their own way of teaching and uplifting their students towards betterment. However, critical learning, gentle encouragement and improvement is a healthier way of doing it, in my view.
